Course Description

Participants in this –virtual– 2-week workshop will be introduced to the mystic and inspiring world of our favorite art coding software: Max/MSP/Jitter. Lessons will be administered through a series of pre-recorded video tutorials which students will be able to download and keep for future reference. The Instructor – Thomas Martinez – will also be available during the two weeks to answer questions and help guide personal projects.

This course is perfect for artists working with sound or video who are interested in contemporary (and futuristic?) ways of digital media manipulation. Ableton Live 8/9 users interested in how Max can be used for interactive musical experiences and audio-responsive visuals are also welcome to sign up. The goal of this workshop is to give you a solid foundation in Max and the tools to become the next new media art star.

Import a sound or video sample and abstract it beyond recognition – or why not use it to influence the rotation of a 3D object? Use live camera feeds to track moving bodies in a space and turn it into something audible, and musical. How can we harness external forces such as the natural sound environment or even plane old midi data to change parameters and make a completely new and unique audio/visual instrument? For two weeks, these topics and more are our springboard.

If you do not own Max already, is is available for a free 30 – Day trial from cycling74.com/downloads
