About the Guide

The Artist’s Guide to Useful Technology is a program of workshops, symposia, consultations, tutorials and problem-solving forums taught by the Harvestworks staff at art and music centers around the country.

On-site Workshops and Resource Website

Arts organizations and/or college and university music and arts departments host workshops that bring our current services to their students and composer and media artist communities. The workshop program is offered for a negotiated fee and includes access to our web-based reference library and technical resource guides for all participants.

How the Program Works

The host site sends an invite to their constituents for a 2 – 3 hour overview lecture introducing Harvestworks and our most flexible and popular music-making tool for composers - the MAX/MSP/Jitter Software Programming Environment. The size of the audience is limited only by the capacity of the space provided by the host organization.

After a break for lunch we continue with a more project-orientated, hands-on workshop in the afternoon for those who are interested in learning more and have specific questions.

Partnership Opportunities

The workshop could be coordinated with the presentation schedule of the host organization, offering an evening concert by an artist using these new tools in a contemporary music performance.

Our Position in the Field

For the last thirty years Harvestworks has offered composers and digital media artists on-site audio and video studios, workshops and classes in emerging technologies supporting the pioneers of digital art with equipment and instruction. Harvestworks is now a leading center of arts and technology investigation and application.

Our current services reflect the technological needs of today’s new media artists. We offer classes in sensor building, interactive performance systems and programming environments, computer-based recording programs, immersive performance and listening experiences, video editing, web design, Podcasting and DVD production, all of which have become significant tools for the creation, performance and distribution of music and contemporary media art.

Artists who have been commissioned and produced by us have been presented at venues all over the world including Ars Electronica, Lincoln Center, The New Museum, MOMA QNS, Documenta, The Whitney Museum, PS 1 Contemporary Arts Center, The Venice Biennale, Artists Space and on PBS and National Public Radio.

The Artist’s Guide to Useful Technology is supported by the New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. The purpose of the Music Fund is to increase access to and appreciation of music of our time by audiences throughout New York State.
