Learn how to write for robotic instruments using MIDI. Joshua Fried will offer a practical how-to on writing for computer-controlled mechanical instruments and an analysis of the limits of MIDI and other control protocols.  Fried  will demonstrate live with the LEMUR/Paul D. Lerhman 25-piece fully automated ensemble of 8 Yamaha Disklaviers, bells, siren, propellors and percussion.  He will discuss how robots can (or can't) assist in the exploration of music theory, including techniques such as tempo canons (cf. Nancarrow), phase patterns, metric modulation, and microtonality.
