Our collection is a unique and valuable document of early experimental work by artists using sound and new technology. Harvestworks was the first organization in New York City to provide the independent art community with affordable access to recording studios, and to support the pioneers of computer music with equipment and instruction.
Since 1983, Harvestworks’ Creative Residency Program has commissioned artists to make new work, supporting them through the production process, and bringing their work to the public. Composers have always been at the forefront of experiment and invention in the use of technology, and in the first years of the program, comprised the majority of the resident artists. But Harvestworks also invited non-musicians into the audio studio and let them explore audio tools with the help of professional engineers. The Archive therefore also demonstrates the influence of these tools on fine art, film and video and on the new art form that was evolving to be purely digital and on the Internet.
The Archive is an extraordinary record of work by artists who have gone on to become leading figures in music and audio art, and was funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a public agency. |
