Microcontroller programming has been reserved for engineering students and professional hardware developers due to the system architecture and soup-to-nuts programming knowledge required to develop projects. New platforms, specifically the Arduino platform, were created to bridge this gap, and allow tech-savvy non-engineers the ability to prototype electronics projects through a simple integrated development environment, complete with a pre-assembled board with input/output connections for myriad project ideas.
Microcontroller Programming for Artists will concentrate on learning the syntax of C-type programming languages, exploring basic electronics and sourcing and implementing different components in various tutorial-type projects, that will give the student the necessary building blocks to start creating interactive electronic projects. The included lab kit will provide all the necessary components for the class, including an Arduino board, various electronic components and prototyping hardware for ease of use. Students are expected to be comfortable working with computers and eager to understand development languages. No programming knowledge is required, although some is helpful. -BIO- Roberto Osorio-Goenaga is a multimedia artist, musician, and software developer.
