[June 7] Jon Meyer: Digital Materialism and its ramifications in arts practice

JUNE 7, yes, not "17th" as falsely advertised....

Jon's artwork examines the relationship between hand and tool in art. He will bring some of the drawings he has made using custom drawing tools, and talk about his approach and the process he uses to make work. He will also give a short demonstration of using Processing to write a "sketch".

Harvestworks is pleased to present visual artist Jon Meyer, a recipient of a 2009 NYFA Fellowship, and a former research scientist at the NYU Media Research Laboratory.

Jon will cover both theory and practice in his talk. He will show artworks, discuss process, give a demonstration of coding, and then talk about theoretical issues.

Jon's artwork examines the relationship between hand and tool in art. He will bring some of the drawings he has made using custom drawing tools, and talk about his approach and the process he uses to make work. He will also give a short demonstration of using Processing (processing.org) to write a "sketch".

Then Jon offers reflections on digital materialism and its ramifications in arts practice. He describes the relationship between coding and sketching, and argues that we need to think through the act of coding more fully - considering the politics of code, how code connotes, how it approximates, and the ways it draws on material. He references Donna Harraway, Jacques Rancière and French paleontologist André Leroi-Gourhan, among others.

Jon Meyer is currently a visiting artist at the California College of the Arts, where he holds a joint appointment teaching graduate art, graduate design and critical studies. Meyer has exhibited his artwork in London, New York, Seattle and San Francisco. He holds an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, London, and an MS in Computer Science from New York University. http://www.jonmeyer.com
