“Testu Collective’s Listening to the Ether extends the artists’ ongoing investigation into electromagnetic phenomena and the invisible forces that shape our technological environment. At the center of the installation is a magnetic drum machine inspired by Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. As magnetized wheels rotate, their changing magnetic fields are translated into electrical signals and rendered audible as rhythm and tone.
Replacing conventional drums and mechanical percussion with magnetic flux, the work generates sound through variations in rotational speed, magnetic polarity, and spatial arrangement. Each wheel produces its own shifting frequency and harmonic character, creating an evolving composition of pulses, interference, and vibration. Listening to the Ether transforms an ordinarily imperceptible physical process into a material listening experience, revealing electromagnetism not simply as a scientific principle, but as a rhythmic and compositional force.”
