This workshop will aim to provide a good working knowledge of sound to camera setups for TV shooting and separate sound recording aimed at the more documentary style DSLR shoots.

General industry standard practices will also be covered.

The workshop would suit anybody that needs to know how to accomplish good location sound for visual projects. Whether you are a beginner to sound or have some sound knowledge and want to know the ropes for recording sound for picture in a professional environment.

Practical shooting scenarios will take place with review at the end.

Subjects covered:

  • Common mics used in location recording and working principals.
  • Signal flow through mixer.
  • Signal flow to and through the camera.
  • Radio mic operation and micing participants/ talent.
  • Boom operation and techniques.
  • Separate DSLR recording setup and syncing techniques.
  • Straight to Camera setups.

Paddy Hanlon has been involved in the audio industry since 1995. He started off in live music events then moved to pro audio sales, which provided a path in to music composition for documentary and sound design for theater. He moved in to location recording for Film and TV in 2006 and since then has worked on various projects including Feature Film work, TV Drama, Advert, Corporate and reality TV shoots. He currently works in the industry in New York. Credits include: Game Of Thrones season one, Standby, Stay, What Richard Did, Savage, Rewind, Pentecost.
