Miguel Frasconi (New York) and Joker Nies (Cologne) modify or build their instruments to their needs, creating music from a uniquely imagined tradition. Apart from various analog devices, modified electronic toys and high-end synth modules, they both work with the Omnichord, an electronic autoharp that in its modified, or “bent” form, is a favorite instrument of composers looking for unique ways to create spontaneous and delicate music with subtle control. THIS CLASS IS LIMITED TO 12 PEOPLE. As part of the Dark Circuits Festival, this is a crash course in building connections between Pure Data or Processing and DIY CMOS circuits using Arduino. This is a really fun way of learning how to integrate software based interfaces, custom code, and physical hardware through music! Don’t worry if you’re not a seasoned expert in any of these areas. [Jun 2-4] Claudia Robles’ SKIN – Installation with bio-data

Claudia Robles’ SKIN is an installation, in which visitors have the opportunity to use a GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) interface, which measures their skin’s moisture. The variations of these values are an indication of psychological arousal, such as for example appearance of stress or relaxation. The values received from the GSR are further transmitted to a computer in order to transform the sound and the images of the interactive space. Visitors are therefore invited to participate in order to make an impact on the audiovisual environment through their own emotions. Continue reading

Violinist/composer Mari Kimura will present a demonstration/lecture on her creative process of ONE, multi-lingual, interactive audio visual mini-opera. Mari will demonstrate her use of “MO”, a bowing motion sensor developed by IRCAM’s Realtime Musical Interaction Team, which tracks her musical expression in this project. ONE, a mini-opera in four acts (Birth, Youth, Conflict, Cure), with the theme of “love, humanity, faith and global solidarity.” Continue reading

Vox Novus and Harvestworks invited composers and sound artists to submit recorded works as 5.1 audio 60 seconds or less in length to be included in a special 60×60 project collaboration in New York City. [May 2-4] Allison Berkoy: Company

Allison Berkoy presents Company, an interactive multimedia experience of stories, games, and performances. Guests enter an installation environment suggesting a living room. They meet a life-sized figure protruding from a canvas, enlivened through video projection, with an invitation to stay. The figure makes requests of guests, discloses stories and secrets in absurd and sometimes uncomfortable progressions, and entertains. Continue reading
