Our Town Selfie knits discrete remote selfie video performances into a new media homage to Our Town. Every scene submitted through the app by anyone with a selfie performance produces a new ephemeral version of the play.

Our Town Selfie builds on Steve Bull’s Cellphonia engine developed from a 2005 NYSCA grant that has had 12 unique audio performances at such venues as the ZeroOne Festival, NIME, E.A.T. Revisited at Stevens Institute, Harvestworks’ New York Electronic Art Festival and most recently Wave Farm this June.

The project will be installed physically in a room in Nolan Park building 5b on Governor’s island.  The artist will produce the first curated Selfie Movie and that will be projected on the wall to seed the project. 2 Selfie recording booths, similar to voting booths or Photo Booth will be where the participant would record their part in the play.  Each booth is a designated character of the play Our Town.  The part is uploaded to the server and stitched in the next cycle of the play that is projected outside of the booths in the greater room. The play cycle is projected on the wall outside of the booths. The artist will be filtering the selfies as they come in so the content will be managed. By automatically assembling multiple selfie performances, Our Town Selfie exploits performance democratization and remote direction.

Steve Bull Project Team

STEVE BULL, a technology artist, has for the last 10 years created locative (location specific) narratives and games that explore the social, technological, and creative possibilities of cell phones. His works have been exhibited through The Getty, MoMA, PBS, the Kitchen, American Film Institute, Berlin Video Festival, Columbus Film Festival, and countless other museums and festivals. He has recently focused on augmented reality studies and conducts Cellphonia, and online opera.

TERESE SVOBODA, acclaimed novelist, poet, and playwright, has collaborated previously with Steve Bull on video essays, short films, and other multimedia artworks. As a New York based educator, writer, and recipient of numerous awards including a recent Guggenheim fellowship, Svoboda’s contemporary literature not only gathers national and international regard but also pairs effectively with the narratives explored in Steve Bull’s designs.

BILL RAYMOND, an award-winning actor and past member of Mabou Mines, has appeared or starred in over 66 feature films and innumerable smaller performances besides. He has worked with directors Stephen Spielberg, George Clooney, Lars von Trier, Spike Lee, Mike Figgis, and Terry Gilliam, and has held roles on Broadway beyond his own directorial work in radio and theater. His work with Steve and Terese adds to an already extensive and acclaimed history of performance and artistic leadership.

This project was produced in part by public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the New York State Council on the Arts’ Electronic Media and Film Presentation Funds grant program, administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.
