Sally Gates is a New Zealand born guitarist, currently based in New York. Her new group, Titan to Tachyons, is an experimental prog-rock trio with Kenny Grohowski (Secret Chiefs 3, Brand-X, etc) and Matt Hollenberg (John Zorn, Cleric). The band is currently working on a debut album at Colin Marston’s Thousand Caves studio in their home base of New York.

Best known as an adept, experimental player from her prior work with the prog metal band Orbweaver, Sally often performs live in NYC with improvisational ensembles, such as Triphammer (a trio with Larry Kwartowitz and Johnny DeBlase), and other musicians such as Trevor Dunn, Greg Fox, John Longstreth, Shahzad Ismaily, and recently at a John Zorn improv night. Other live appearances have included performing with Buke and Gase, Regi Wooten, and touring internationally as a session member for Gigan and Success Will Write Apocalypse Across the Sky. Always open to different musical experiences, she has worked with performance artist Naama Tsabar at Art Basel Miami, and performed in Tatsuya Nakatani’s Gong Orchestra. She provided guest solos on the title track of doom masters Northern Crown’s debut album, and is endorsed by PRS Guitars, Orange Amps, and Asterope Cables.

Growing up in New Zealand, Sally studied music from a young age, playing the piano from age 5, and picking up other instruments such as the saxophone and violin along the way. At 14, she began the electric guitar and immediately began writing music and playing in bands. She studied theory through the Royal Schools of Music, and passed the Cambridge International Exams Music papers. Moving to the US in 2008 to pursue music, she began touring nationally within months of arriving as the bass player for the progressive tech-death metal band Gigan. She quickly picked up other gigs as a touring session musician, and in 2011 joined Orbweaver as the lead guitarist. Relocating to New York in 2018, she is now focused on composing original music, collaborating with other musicians in improvisational contexts, and teaches privately.
