The Spaces Contained in Each is a multi-channel sound installation based on recordings of “silence.” Sound and visual artists, Steve Roden and Stephen Vitiello have collected pre-recorded works on vinyl that relate to themes of silence as well as their own field recordings of quiet spaces. For the installation at Saint Cornelius Chapel, these recordings will be mixed and spatialized as a response to the artists’ experience in the space. This event is part of this year’s New York Electronic Art Festival.

The Spaces Contained in Each is a multi-channel sound installation based on recordings of “silence.” The piece was originally created as a performance for Rothko Chapel in Houston, TX and staged to coincide with the Menil Collection’s exhibition Silence, which looked at (and listened to) artworks related to Cage’s infamous composition, 4’33.” Roden and Vitiello have collected pre-recorded works on vinyl that relate to themes of silence as well as their own field recordings of quiet spaces. For the installation at Saint Cornelius Chapel, these recordings will be mixed and spatialized in response to the artists’ experience in the space. Various forms of manipulation, both analog and digital will be used to create a sense of spaces within a space. This is Steve Roden and Stephen Vitiello’s second collaborative installation. Their first collaboration, from perfect cubes, to broken trains was presented in Marfa, TX in 2008, as part of the exhibition The Marfa Sessions.
This project is part of this year’s New York Electronic Art Festival, and is supported in part by the Harvestworks Creativity + Technology = Enterprise program funded in part by the Rockefeller Foundation’s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts.
For this work, Roden/Vitiello are collaborating with Paul Geluso, designer of the 3D Sound Object from which the work is diffused. Paul Geluso is a Harvestworks Creativity + Technology = Enterprise fellow, a program funded in part by the Rockefeller Foundation’s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund.
Stephen Vitiello
Stephen Vitiello is an electronic musician and media artist. His sound installations have been presented internationally including at MASS MoCA, the 2002 Whitney Biennial, the 2006 Biennial of Sydney, the Cartier Foundation, Paris and in public spaces including on the High Line in NYC. Forthcoming exhibitions include Soundings: A Contemporary Score at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC. Vitiello has collaborated with such artists and musicians as Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler, Pauline Oliveros, Julie Mehretu, Steve Roden and Ryuichi Sakamoto. His work is the subject of a 27- minute documentary produced by Australian TV. Vitiello has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship for Fine Arts, Creative Capital funding in the category of Emerging Fields, and an Alpert/Ucross Award for Music. Originally from New York, Vitiello is now based in Richmond, VA where he is an Associate Professor in the department of Kinetic Imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Steve Roden
Steve Roden is an artist living in Pasadena California. His work includes painting, sculpture, drawing, film/video, sound, text and performance. Since the mid-1980’s he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions including: The Menil Collection, Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, UCLA Hammer Museum Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art EMST Athens Greece, Singuhr-Horgalerie in Parochial Berlin, The Kitchen New York, La Casa Encendida Madrid. Site specific sound works include Daniel Libeskind’s Run Run Shaw Media Center Hong Kong, James Turrell Skyspace at the Henry Art Museum Seattle, and the RM Schindler House/Mak Center for Art and Architecture Los Angeles, and Alvaro Siza’s pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery London. In 2011, the Armory Center for the Arts mounted a 20 year survey of Roden’s work, curated by Howard Fox. Roden has received numerous grants and residencies including: Foundation of Contemporary Arts, DAAD research fellowship, Chinati artist in residence.
Paul Geluso
Paul Geluso is an engineer, composer, musician, and educator who has been working with artists who use sound as a creative medium for more than 20 years. He has received individual artist grants for his electro-acoustic music from the New York State Council on the Arts and Meet the Composer. His solo and collaborative works have been presented at the local, national and international museums and art spaces. Paul is currently on the full-time Music Technology faculty at NYU Steinhardt researching 3D audio recording and playback technology.
