Born in Latent Space is a live, online lecture-performance unfolding as a speculative and improvisational collaboration between artist Marlon Barrios Solano and generative machine learning systems. Seated before a laptop, the performer engages in a real-time duet with AI—where voice, gesture, code, and algorithmic responses collide to explore the deep poetic terrain of latent space. All participants must open an account in Hugging Face prior to the lecture.

In machine learning, latent space refers to a high-dimensional abstract field where compressed and hidden features of data are encoded—a space of potentiality. Here, it becomes a metaphorical and political zone: an unstable, generative dimension where memory, desire, identity, and imagination recombine through computational play.
Structured as a sequence of vignettes, each moment functions as a seed—prompting a traversal through the infinite narrative vectors encoded in machine learning’s unseen architectures. The performance moves through storytelling, re-performance, web-based interaction, movement scores, and audiovisual improvisation, shaped continuously by AI-generated text, images, and sound.
Born in Latent Space (Online) invites audiences into an intimate encounter with the machinic imagination—where the boundaries between human and algorithm blur, and new forms of sense-making emerge in real time.
