Hypercartogram 2.0 is a surround-sound installation with projected video. It is a multichannel audio map of two urban spaces: Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn in New York City (USA) and Saddar Town, Karachi (Pakistan), punctuated by live action and animated video mapped onto a sculptural collage. Urban field recordings, eavesdropped conversations, and industrial noises are shaped into a musical collage. An accompanying 3D video presents a journey through Karachi’s Empress Market with an abstract, animated parade through Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway. The video illuminates an architectural model of an imagined combination/collision of the two locations. The first iteration, Hypercartogram 1.0, premiered as part of Harvestworks New Works residency in 2014.
