[Aug 27 – Oct 30] Marine MamMLs by Kristin Lucas

Marine MamMLs is an interactive WebXR project that visually sonifies whale communication and cargo ship noise in the NY Bight to demonstrate how close in range their sound frequency is, and how ship noise interference with whale communication can increase the risk of whale injury and casualty. The project integrates data and recordings collected by marina scientists who monitor whale migration and population through the use of present day sensors, microphones, and machine learning (ML) processes.

Location: The Art and Technology Program FLUID: an art and tech exhibition in Building 10a, Nolan Park, Governors Island

Artist Day: Saturday September 10, 2022

Open to the public from 11am to 5pm Weekends

Conscious of Marine MamMLs dependency on planetary computational networks to reach its audience, and the corresponding impacts of networks on ecosystems, Lucas’s ethos is to work with code rather than digital files, to minimize the file size and the web project’s carbon footprint – and to underscore the significant role that networks play in information exchange, education, and social organization. The project is written with the open source JavaScript library p5.js

Marine MamMLs is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature; and fiscal sponsor Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center.

Kristin Lucas
Kristin Lucas‘s experimental works explore externalities of everyday systems and paradigms through human and nonhuman lenses. Mixed feelings imbue mixed realities with complexity and exuberance about existence. Lucas’s work has been featured in Art in America, Hyperallergic, and Engadget, and is represented by Postmasters, And/Or Gallery, and Electronic Arts Intermix. She earned degrees in art from The Cooper Union and Stanford University. Lucas lives between Austin and New York and teaches expanded media at the University of Texas in Austin.

Joe McKay
Joe McKay is a media artist who often uses games and play as a framework for interactive projects. McKay has presented his work nationally and internationally, and is Lucas’s frequent collaborator. He earned degrees in art from NSCAD and UC Berkeley, and has been a participant of the Whitney Independent Studio Program. McKay lives in New York City and serves as faculty of New Media at SUNY Purchase College.

“Imposing the Web’s parameters on the everyday, Lucas plumbs the precariousness of identity, both bodily and psychic, in the Internet age.” – Courtney Fiske, Art in America

“The new media artist’s concern is not mastery of the technology, but rather its demystification. Her results are often glitchy and imperfect.” Wendy Vogel, Art in America

“Kitschy, gorgeous, and enigmatic, for this body of work Lucas sees flamingos everywhere, perhaps precisely because they are becoming evermore vulnerable to the consequences of climate change. This is a well-researched and playful flamboyance of works that, when taken together, gesture toward the deceptively simple yet deliciously complex insight made by anthropologist Anna Tsing that “human nature is an interspecies relationship”. Let the choir sing and honk their affirmations.” Andy Campbell, Artforum

“This is the beauty of Lucas’ art. It is, like her, devoid of pretense. She lives in a world that is often obtuse, even off-limits. […] She is, on paper, an artist‘s artist.” Christopher Trout
